From Capps Reunion writeup.

George & Sarah sailed from Princess Dock, Liverpool, England on March 30, 1830,
they landed in New Orleans in July 1830, they came up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to Keyesville, Charion County Missouri. From there they went to St. Louis where they stopped for a short time. From St. Louis to Winchester, Illinois.
It is known that they stayed there for a considerable length of time. William Thorpe was born here in 1834, Sarah Thorpe Rich in 1838, Harriet Thorpe Dogget and Eliza Thorpe Bush were married here.
The Thorpe family moved to Winchester, MO for a short time before coming to Spring Creek in the western part of Adair County, MO about 1840. They bought land direct from the Government and made there home. A large maple sugar orchard was on their farm.

In 1849 Grandfather Thorpe went to California where he worked at the blacksmith trade. He went by the way of Kansas City and Salt Lake City and returned by way of Panama. He walked across the Isthmus a distance of 13 miles. Returning to Adair Co. he continued with his blacksmith trade and farmed his ground.

MY ANCESTORS CAME WEST, How, When and Where
By Ermine Capps 1940

George Thorpe lived in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, England. He was a Clocksmith by trade. He was born in 1792 and in 1830, at the age of 38, he suddenly, with his family left Coningsby, leaving his home and business property and sailing for America.

The descendants couldn’t agree on the cause of his departure from England, but the majority seem it was to escape an English war draft.

It took them six weeks making the trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

This is from another write up
The ship on which the family sailed was six weeks making the trip across the Atlantic ocean. Some times when the ship was caught in a calm it would not move forward for days at a time. At one time a large fish followed the ship for several days keeping near enough to the top of the water that it could be seen very plainly. No one seemed to know why it was following the ship.

Instead of coming to a part of the Atlantic coast they sailed into the Gulf of Mexico and landed at New Orleans, After staying there a short time they came up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, where they made there home. About ten years later they left St. Louis, coming to Adair County, Missouri in the early
1840’s. The family settled on land entered from the government in the west part of the county by a small settlement named Cookville.

After the houses were built Grandpa (George Thorpe) went back to St. Louis and brought back the first cook stove ever used in Adair Co. or west of the Chariton River.

The first night spent in the new log cabin was filled with terror. They were in the edge of a woods or forest. After darkness fell, they heard hideous and terrifying noises which seemed to come from the woods, They huddled close together, being sure the noises were made by indians, who any moment would attack them.

The long night came to a close, day dawned, there was no attack by indians, no one died, not even of fright.. The Indians became nothing more than hoot owls.

Mr. Thorp bought some tools and did his own smithing. He also did work for other people and those who knew him said he was very skillful as a smith.

He also planted a young orchard of seedling apple trees. Some of the apples were very good. Parents: George I THORPE and Mary Elizabeth GREEN.
