Story of Melvin's death
I don't know just how much Craig told you about Melvin. But when in July all this excitement began, I dug out all the old letters, news clippings, and diary of Grandpa Strand's and began to pour over them. I knew Melvin had been hospitalized at one time in Minneapolis and had received shock treatments. Just what the diagnosis was I didn't know and still don't but hope one day to find the answer to. I learned lately that he had been hospitalized twice - a couple of years apart - for about 4 and a half months each time. And several letters written after he had been in California for a while (not his letters) indicated that he was feeling depressed for several months before his disappearance.
The day of his disappearance he had talked on the phone to a friend out there who had invited him to a family gathering and Melvin declined saying he wanted to go out walking in the hills - apparently an enjoyable pastime for many in that area, including Melvin. Mother got a call a few days later it appears saying he couldn't be found anywhere. She flew out there with Uncle Martin, and stayed with friends of Mel's. They did all the normal checking with authorities and even hired bloodhounds to try and track him. His scent had been found in the hill area but recent rains made it impossible to go far. His car was found a little less than a mile from his apt., locked. Mom found his apt. in disarray... like he had just gotten up from bed and decided to go out. They stayed about a week or a little longer and decided to pack up his things to send home for him to claim when he returned from where ever he had gone.
From the information the authorities gleaned in July through September, it
appears to me that he was out in Strawberry Canyon wandering around and
lost his way...and just kept walking. His remains were found about 4 and
one half miles beyond the end of the trail. I personally have gotten lost
in the woods and know how easily it can happen. He probably kept walking
until he just couldn't walk any farther and sat down exhausted where he was
bitten by a snake and soon died.
It is a real miracle that we have finally gotten the mystery solved after
all these years. It was so wonderful to be together last Sat. for the
graveside service in Clarissa where he is laid to rest beside his dad.
Maybe Craig told you all this...but anyway there it is again.
