This letter, submitted by descendant Judy Paschen, was penned by James to his
son Shadrach. it was included with a letter to Shadrach from Phebe Hoag (enclosed
under Hoag Family, p #23), who was James daughter and Shadrach's sibling:

Respected Child it is a long time Since I herd any thing from thee, I now take
my pen to write a few
lines to let thee know that I am yet in the land of the living enjoying as good
health as can be expected for one that has such a cough as long as I have I
am now liveing with Robert again & we are enjoying
usual health. I looked a long time to see thee before I left Ellery but did not
see thee I began to thing (sec) thee was gone from works to rewards & that
I should never see thy face again be that as it may I
though I would address a few line to Shadrach Shearmand & if thee was living
thee would answer it soone. I have long wanted to hear from thee of some of the
family for I thought they would certainly write
if thee was not liveing O how I Longe to see then once more tht we might tak
sweet counsel together it cannot be expected that I can stay a great while on
earth I am now entered into my 86 year but the time ,
I know my cough is very hard at times but still I am highly favored & I have
been able to walk to meeting Seveal (sic) times but my good friend Filo D. Lockwood
has brought me home sevral times he is very kind I went last fall to quarterly
meeting Saw many of my old friends I went on the Car & Filo D. Lockwood
brought me home ahd a very good meeting & was glad to see my old friends
& they appeared glad to see me & we had a good time together there ws
two traveling Minesters thare that Preached the gosple in the power & Demonstration
of the Spirit & I believe the holygost sent down from above I want they
