The Capps family cannot trace their ancestry beyond great-grandfather Long, who lived
along the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. He owned a plant
for the production of pig iron and employed a number of men. His daughter Barbara was
thrown from a horse when a gir! and so severely injured she remained a cripple the rest of
her life. This happened a short time before she and Grandfather David Capps were
married, about 1816.
In the spring of 1844 they moved to Adair County, Missouri. The journey was made in
wagons and was long and tiresome. They purchased government land in the western part
of the county and made their home there. She died in 1851 at the age of 58. Five girls of
the family and Isaac married into the families of Lay, who were relatives of Thomas Lay, a
Revolutionary soldier. One son Thomas, was killed in the Civil War. A daughter died in
eariy fife.
Henry married Charlotte Thorpe in 1845, a daughter of George and Sarah Aires Thorpe,
who came to America from England in 1830 and about 1840 located on a farm in the
western part of Adair County. He was bom in Coningsby, Lincoln Shire, England in 1791.
A clock-tinker by trade, he became a blacksmith and farmer in America. He died in 1858.
ffis wife was born in Bainton, York Shire, England, in 1794. She died in 1881.
Eleven of their children lived to a ripe age.
Henry and his wife bought government land joining the home where they lived the rest of
their lives, except for a few years in Schuyler Count, Missouri. Ten children were born to
them. Seven of them lived past their 70th birthdays.
Isaac married Amanda Lay, daughter of Nathan Lay. She died in 1870. Three of children
lived to maturity. In 1872 he married Mrs. Sarah McPhetridge Truitt, a daughter of
William and Maty McPhetridge, who were early pioneers. Five of their children lived to
reach adult life.
Isaac bought the home place where he lived the rest of his life, except for a short time in
Southern Iowa. He was a Baptist minister, the father of twelve children. He died in
1920. Grandfather Capps (David) died in Southern Iowa in 1865. He lived with his son
Isaac after the death of his wife.
