Mrs. Green, 91, Knits Mittens
and Looks Forward to Summer
BATTLE LAKE - Mrs. C. H.
Green observed her 91st birthday January 26 with several of
the family and friends calling
to wish her well.
Mrs. Green has been confined
to her home since early in December when she fell on the ice
as she took food to the bird
feeder outside her window.
No bones were broken but it
was a painful fall. Mrs. Green
has been an active, energetic person.
Since the death of her husband
in 1950 she has lived alone with
the exception of the frequent visits
of her children. Last year her
daughter Pearl retired and came
home to live.
Mrs. Green was born in Sonmar,
Norway, in 1873. She came to
America with her parents and
younger sister when she was 12
years old. They came by freighter
to Quebec, taking 14 days to make
the Atlantic trip. There were many
icebergs on this northern route,
which caused delays.
She recalls her father sold part of
his farm to finance the trip to the
school teacher in whose home
Mrs. Green attended classes.
There were no public schools.
She also said they carried all their possessions and walked several
miles to the place on the fjord
where the ship was docked.
The family came to Donnelly,
Stevens County, where two sisters
and two brothers who had come
over earlier were located.
Mr. and Mrs. Green came to Battle
Lake in 1902. In 1906 Mr. Green
started carrying the mail, which he
continued to do for 42 years with
successive modes of transportation.
I The family home has been on
the same lots although. Changed
and remodeled
Besides raising a family of
three boys and four girls, this
energetic woman found time to
weave hundreds of rugs on a
loom and also many intricate
hooked rugs. Most of these were
given away as gifts.
Mrs. Green is now knitting
mittens because she has given
away all she made last year to
her many great grandchildren.
She is anxiously waiting for
the snow to go and. warm weather
to come so she can get out into
the garden. "My back will be
okay by then,. I'm sure, she
said as tripped sprightly
across the room.
